The Sports Data Warehouse (SDW) is a project initiated by the IOC to create the most comprehensive sports database ever, providing the definitive source of biographical data, current and historical results for use throughout the Olympic Movement. It is created through the aggregation and merging of multiple external data sources, in order to create one consolidated ‘golden record’. The ultimate goal is for this process to be fully automated; however, in this early phase of the project there is a requirement for manual intervention and confirmation of the merges suggested by the system, along with correction and standardisation of the various metrics used in an athlete’s profile (weight, height, etc.)

The role of the Data Steward is to review the duplicates suggested by the SDW and confirm their merging. This will require familiarity with the SDW interface, along with communication and coordination with sports data experts working for International Sporting Federations and the IOC, following the protocols that have been designed to ensure that only correct merges occur.

A secondary role will be to standardise the various metrics used in an athlete’s profile (weight, height, etc.). Because the data is sourced from a number of third-party databases, height can be recorded in cm, or m, feet, or feet and inches. The same applies to other information in the athlete’s biographies (dates, distances, times). The Data Steward will also be responsible for reviewing these and standardising them to align the base units specified for use within the SDW.

Job Responsibilities

Daily Duties

  • Data Stewards need to key in manual information quickly and accurately, check for incorrect information and formatting to fulfil company quality control policies in addition to correcting any errors introduced during the manual data entry process. A typical day will consist of the following duties:
  • Daily coordination call with supervisor
  • Login to SDW database and review list of duplicate/merge requests
  • Coordinate with Sports Data Experts and online research to confirm merges
  • Review of merged athlete’s profile, correction of any invalid units found on merged athlete records
  • Completion of daily worksheet and task list, for review with supervisor in the following days coordination call

    • Job Qualifications

    Experience required

  • Data Stewards should have completed high school post graduate diploma / secondary level education
  • They should understand the basic functionality of spreadsheet creation, word processing and database management programs.
  • Experience with historical databases is desirable
  • Experience with document version control systems is desirable
  • Experience with Quality Assurance Testing is desirable

  • This is a 3-months freelance position based remotely with the possibility to extend for a further 3 months.
  • The Data Steward will work autonomously and must supply their own remote working equipment.  A laptop with camera and good quality wireless internet should be sufficient.
